Home is more than a place.

It is where routines are built, memories are made, and relationships grow. It is where people feel comfortable, connected, and most like themselves.

When someone experiences a significant illness, cognitive decline, or another life-changing event, questions about where they should live often become one of the most emotional decisions families face.

Is it safe for them to remain at home?

Would they benefit from additional support?

What living arrangement will allow them to maintain the highest possible quality of life?

These decisions involve far more than selecting a residence. They involve protecting a person’s dignity, preserving meaningful relationships, and finding the balance between safety and independence.

At Nevada Guardian Services, we believe every living arrangement should reflect the individual’s unique goals, needs, and preferences while providing the support they require.

There Is No One-Size-Fits-All Solution

Every individual has different circumstances.

Some may thrive in their own home with additional community-based services. Others may benefit from assisted living, rehabilitation, or another supportive environment. As needs change over time, the most appropriate setting may change as well.

The goal is not to find a place that simply meets someone’s medical needs, but to find an environment where the individual can continue living with dignity, comfort, and as much independence as possible.

A thoughtful decision considers the whole person, including their physical health, emotional well-being, personal preferences, social connections, and long-term quality of life.

A Guardian’s Responsibility Goes Beyond Placement

The National Guardianship Association’s Standard 12: Duties of the Guardian of the Person outlines important responsibilities related to an individual’s care and living environment.

The standard emphasizes that guardians should seek the least restrictive setting that reasonably meets the person’s goals, needs, and preferences. Whenever appropriate, priority should be given to home or other community-based settings that allow individuals to remain connected to their lives and support systems.

The standard also recognizes that guardians have ongoing responsibilities beyond selecting a residence. These include helping ensure the individual receives appropriate care, maintaining communication with family and the court when required, promoting important relationships, and making reasonable efforts to secure the medical, therapeutic, educational, vocational, and social services the individual needs.

Looking Beyond the Building

When families think about residential placement, it is easy to focus on the physical location, but ethical guardianship asks a much broader question.

What environment will allow this person to live the fullest life possible?

That means considering factors such as:

  • The individual’s goals, preferences, and daily routines.
  • Safety while maintaining the highest level of independence possible.
  • Access to healthcare and supportive services.
  • Opportunities for social interaction and community involvement.
  • Proximity to family members and other important relationships.
  • Comfort, familiarity, and emotional well-being.
  • Whether the setting avoids unnecessary restrictions.

The best environment is not always the one with the highest level of care. Often, it is the one that provides the right level of support while preserving the individual’s autonomy and sense of purpose.

Preserving Relationships Along the Way

Changing where someone lives can also change how they experience the people around them.

Family visits may become more difficult. Longtime neighbors may no longer be nearby. Favorite activities and familiar routines can suddenly disappear.

These changes can have a significant impact on emotional well-being.

That is why Standard 12 encourages guardians to prioritize living arrangements that allow individuals to maintain important social relationships whenever possible.

Staying connected to family, friends, faith communities, hobbies, and familiar routines helps preserve identity and quality of life during times of transition.

A move should never be viewed as simply changing an address. It is about helping someone continue living a life that remains meaningful and connected.

Supporting the Whole Person

Providing support involves much more than ensuring someone has a safe place to live.

Professional guardians work to coordinate the many aspects of an individual’s well-being, which may include:

  • Coordinating healthcare appointments and treatment plans.
  • Communicating with physicians and other care providers.
  • Monitoring changing needs over time.
  • Helping individuals access therapeutic and social services.
  • Supporting educational or vocational opportunities when appropriate.
  • Collaborating with family members, attorneys, social workers, and other professionals.
  • Keeping the court informed when significant changes require review.

These responsibilities help ensure care remains coordinated, responsive, and centered on the individual’s changing needs.

Working Together for Better Outcomes

Choosing an appropriate living environment is rarely a decision made by one person alone.

Families bring invaluable insight into a loved one’s history, values, and preferences. Healthcare providers contribute medical expertise. Attorneys help navigate legal responsibilities. Social workers, case managers, and other professionals offer resources and support that help create a comprehensive plan of care.

When everyone works together, decisions become more thoughtful, coordinated, and person-centered.

Most importantly, the individual remains at the center of every discussion.

Supporting Lives, Not Just Living Arrangements

At Nevada Guardian Services, we recognize that where a person lives influences nearly every aspect of their daily life.

That is why we strive to identify living environments that reflect each individual’s goals, preserve meaningful relationships, and promote the highest level of independence possible while ensuring appropriate care and support.

Through collaboration, ethical decision-making, and person-centered advocacy, we work to ensure every individual is treated with dignity, respect, and compassion.

Because selecting the right environment is about far more than choosing a place to live.

It is about helping someone continue living a life that reflects who they are, surrounded by the people, routines, and opportunities that matter most.
